John Wooden (coached his UCLA team to 10 NCAA championships within a 12 year period, 7 in a row) was way ahead of his time in that he valued the importance of developing and training the whole athlete. Notice in his "Pyramid of Success" how many of the triangles represent elements that lie within an athlete's mental/emotional being as compared to the physical elements. Athlete's notoriously train physically, religiously, routinely...but how many train mentally with that same rigor? It makes logical sense that training on every level, religiously and routinely will only enhance every element of your performance.
